Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, dream, and build a future. Yet for thousands of girls in The Gambia, that opportunity is still uncertain.

Education has the power to transform lives, yet for thousands of girls in The Gambia, simply completing school remains an uphill battle. While the country has made real progress in expanding access to primary education, that progress often stalls the moment girls approach secondary school. Poverty, child marriage, gender inequality, limited access to digital technology, high dropout rates, and sexual abuse continue to stand between girls and the education they deserve.

The barriers do more than interrupt a girl's schooling. They narrow her future, put her health and wellbeing at risk, and slow the social and economic development of entire communities. When a girl is forced out of school, it isn't just her future that's diminished, it's her community's.

1. Too Many Girls Never Complete Their Education

The Gambia has made significant progress in expanding access to education, with more girls than ever enrolling in primary school. However, the greatest challenge is no longer getting girls into school; it's keeping them there.

​According to UNESCO, an estimated 79.2% of girls complete primary education, but completion falls to 64.9% at lower secondary and just 35.7% at upper secondary level, meaning thousands of girls leave school before gaining the qualifications needed for higher education or meaningful employment. 

The reasons behind these statistics are complex but interconnected. Poverty, child marriage, gender inequality, unsafe journeys to school, and the hidden costs of education continue to force many girls out of the classroom.

​Although public education is officially free, families are still expected to pay for uniforms, books, transport, examination fees, and other school essentials. For low-income households, these costs often determine whether a daughter remains in school or drops out.

2. Gender Norms and Cultural Expectations Continue to Hold Girls Back

In many parts of The Gambia, deeply rooted gender norms and cultural expectations continue to shape the lives of girls long before they reach adulthood. While attitudes are gradually changing, many girls are still expected to prioritise domestic responsibilities over education. 

From an early age, they may spend hours cooking, cleaning, collecting water, caring for younger siblings, or supporting family businesses, leaving little time for studying. In some communities, girls are expected to marry during adolescence, with some becoming wives and mothers as young as 14 years old, bringing their education to an abrupt end. 

Others grow up hearing that their future is in "a man's house", reinforcing the belief that investing in a girl's education is less valuable than preparing her for marriage. These harmful stereotypes limit aspirations, reduce educational opportunities, and perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality.

​Challenging these norms through community engagement, parental education, female role models, and advocacy is essential to ensuring every girl has the opportunity to complete her education and fulfil her potential.

3. Poverty Forces Too Many Girls Out of School

Poverty remains one of the greatest barriers to girls' education in The   Gambia. Although basic education is officially free, the reality for many families is very different.

Parents are still expected to cover the cost of school uniforms, books, stationery, transport, examination fees, and other essential learning materials. For households already struggling to meet daily needs, these expenses can make it impossible to continue a girl's education.   

The World Bank estimates that around 20% of Gambians live below the international poverty line of US$3.00 per day, while the country's GDP per capita is approximately US$919, reflecting the limited financial resources available to many families.

When difficult financial decisions must be made, girls are often expected to leave school to support their families by doing household work or engaging in income-generating activities. ​

What It Really Costs to Educate a Girl

When we talk about education, it’s easy to assume that “free schooling” means there are no costs involved, but for many families in The Gambia, sending a child to school still comes at a cost, often higher than they can afford.

The Everyday Costs Families Face
Even in public schools, parents are expected to cover a range of basic expenses.
  • Tuition: While some schooling is subsidised, families may still pay anywhere between £100 and £500 a year, with private schools costing significantly more.
  • Uniforms & Shoes: Around £10 to £20 per set.
  • Books & Supplies: Roughly £20 to £50 each year.
  • Transport: In rural areas, many girls walk long distances. For safer travel, families may need to pay £5 to £10 a month for transport

Individually, these costs might not seem overwhelming, but together, they quickly become unaffordable for many households. A £10/month sponsorship covers 100% of the direct costs listed above, plus a mentor’s quarterly visit and a health check-in.

Beyond these visible expenses, there are other pressures that families face
Even when official school fees are removed, the cost of uniforms, meals and materials can take up a significant portion of a family’s income. For some, it can be as much as 20% of what they have available to spend. 

There’s also the cost of lost income. When families are struggling, girls are often expected to help, whether that means caring for younger siblings or earning money through menial jobs. Over time, this pulls them further away from education and deeper into the cycle of poverty. 

4. Child Marriage Continues to Cut Girls' Education Short

For many girls in The Gambia, education ends long before they have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Child marriage remains one of the most significant barriers to girls completing secondary education.

According to UNICEF, around 30% of women aged 20–24 in The Gambia were married before the age of 18, limiting their opportunities to continue learning, develop careers, and become financially independent. Once married, many girls are expected to manage household responsibilities and care for children, making a return to school extremely difficult.

Keeping girls in school is one of the most effective ways to delay child marriage and improve future opportunities.

​Research from UNESCO and the Global Partnership for Education shows that girls who complete secondary education are more likely to marry later, earn higher incomes, and raise healthier families.

5. Limited Access to Digital Skills Is Widening the Gender Digital Divide

As the world becomes increasingly digital, many girls in The Gambia risk being left behind because they lack access to computers, reliable internet, and digital skills training. 
While digital literacy is becoming essential for higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, and participation in the modern economy, many schools have limited ICT facilities, particularly in rural communities. 

Girls from low-income households often have fewer opportunities to use technology than boys, further widening the gender digital divide. Without digital skills, girls face reduced access to university opportunities, online learning, scholarships, and future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 

Closing this gap is essential to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). 6. Investing in Girls' Education Creates Lasting Change for Generations

Investing in girls' education in The Gambia is not only the right thing to do but also one of the smartest investments a country can make. According to the World Bank, every additional year of schooling can increase a woman's future earnings by 10–20%, while countries lose billions in lifetime productivity when girls leave school early.

UNESCO estimates that if every girl completed secondary education, child marriage would decline significantly, maternal and child deaths would fall, and millions more women would enter the workforce.

​Educated women are also more likely to invest up to 90% of their income back into their families, compared with 30–40% for men, creating healthier children, stronger communities, and more resilient economies.

Why Every Girl Deserves the Chance to Learn

​Early child marriage, also known as child marriage, is any formal or informal union involving a person under the age of 18. It remains one of the greatest barriers to girls' education in The Gambia and across Africa, often forcing girls to leave school before they can complete their education.

​Globally, around 12 million girls are married before their 18th birthday every year, and more than 650 million women alive today were married as children.

​Education is one of the most effective ways to prevent child marriage, giving girls the knowledge, confidence, and opportunities to shape their own futures. Research also shows that each additional year of schooling reduces the likelihood of early marriage. In The Gambia, tackling child marriage requires communities, schools, families, government, and charities to work together.

What Is Early Child Marriage?

According to UNICEF, child marriage is any formal marriage or informal union where at least one person is under the age of 18. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child recognises 18 as the legal end of childhood, when individuals are considered mature enough to make informed decisions about their lives.

​While some arranged marriages may occur with the full and free consent of adults, forced marriage happens without genuine consent and is a violation of human rights. Children cannot give full, informed consent to marriage because of their age, maturity, and dependence on adults. Child marriage often ends a girl's education, limits her opportunities, and increases her risk of poverty, violence, and poor health.

Is Child Marriage the Same as Forced Marriage?

While not every forced marriage involves a child, every child marriage is considered a form of forced marriage because a person under 18 cannot freely and fully consent to marriage under international human rights standards.

Why Does Early Child Marriage Happen?

Early child marriage is rarely caused by a single factor. Instead, it results from a combination of poverty, gender inequality, cultural traditions, limited access to education, social pressures, and economic hardship.

Understanding these underlying causes is essential to addressing the root of the problem and ensuring that more girls in The Gambia can stay in school, delay marriage, and build independent, fulfilling futures.
Barriers to education

Poverty

​Girls from the poorest households in The Gambia are more than twice as likely to marry as children (49%) as girls from the richest households (19%). Prospective husbands often offer money or gifts to secure marriages that families feel they can't refuse.

Gender Inequality

​Child marriage is reinforced by the belief that girls and women are somehow inferior to men and boys; where a boy's education is prioritised, a girl's path is too often assumed to be marriage, not school.

Cultural and Societal Expectations

​In many communities, child marriage is seen as a positive, traditional part of life. Shifting this requires the same community leaders and structures that currently reinforce it.

Limited Access to Education

​When school is too far to walk, transport isn't available, and fees aren't affordable, marriage starts to look like the more realistic option. Removing these practical barriers keeps a girl's options open.

Teenage Pregnancies

​Some families marry off daughters early, specifically to avoid pre-marital pregnancy. In practice, this usually ends a girl's education permanently rather than protecting it.

Child Marriage Statistics in The Gambia and Africa

​Child marriage remains one of the world's most widespread human rights challenges, affecting millions of girls every year despite global efforts to end the practice. Although progress has been made over the past two decades, the burden remains highest in Sub-Saharan Africa, where rapid population growth means the number of girls at risk continues to rise.

​The Gambia has made important legislative progress by criminalising child marriage, yet many girls, particularly in rural communities, remain vulnerable due to poverty, gender inequality, and cultural norms. The statistics below highlight the scale of the challenge and why protecting girls through education remains an urgent priority.

​Regions: Key Statistics on Early Marriage

Global
• 12 million girls are married before the age of 18 every year.
• More than 640 million women and girls alive today were married before turning 18.
• Child marriage has declined globally over the last 25 years, but progress is not fast enough to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of ending child marriage by 2030.

Africa
• Africa is home to some of the highest child marriage rates in the world.
• More than 130 million women in Africa were married before the age of 18.
• In Sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 1 in 3 young women (31%) were married before their 18th birthday, making it the region with the highest prevalence globally.

West Africa
• West and Central Africa have the highest regional prevalence of child marriage worldwide.
• Around 37% of young women aged 20–24 were married before turning 18.
• Countries across the region continue to experience high rates of child marriage due to poverty, gender inequality, conflict, and limited access to education.

The Gambia
• Approximately 23.1% of women aged 20–24 were married before the age of 18.
• Around 5.6% were married before the age of 15.
• Child marriage is significantly more common in rural regions, with some areas recording rates above 40–50%.
• The Children's (Amendment) Act 2016 prohibits child marriage, but enforcement and community awareness remain ongoing challenges.

In The Gambia, the Child Marriage Data Portal reports that 23% of women are married before age 18 (roughly 264,600 women) and 6% before age 15 (around 73,700 women). That's real progress from 1995, when the rate stood near 50%. But that national number hides considerable variation. In some regions, the reality is far worse. 

A New Global Commitment: The International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage

On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution establishing 27 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage. The resolution was championed by Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone and President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development, alongside Bhuwan Ribhu of Just Rights for Children, and was backed by 67 nations before being adopted by consensus across all 193 UN member states.

"Today, the world has spoken with one voice: child, early and forced marriage has no place in our societies," said Dr. Bio. "This resolution is far more than symbolic - it is a global mandate for action."

How Early Child Marriage Prevents Girls' Education

Girls Leave School Earlier

School often doesn't end because of money; it ends because of marriage. A married girl's role shifts overnight from student to wife, and continuing school is rarely seen as compatible with that.

Pregnancy Interrupts Education

​Marriage and pregnancy are closely linked for girls who marry young, and pregnancy is one of the most common reasons girls drop out entirely, rather than pause temporarily.

Loss of Future Employment

Women who married early earned 8% less on average (across 12 countries studied) than they would have if they had married after 18. Missed education becomes lost lifetime earnings.

Mental and Physical Health

​Child marriage is linked to reduced autonomy, higher risk of partner violence, and greater risk of complications in childbirth.

  • Girls are up to six times less likely to marry as children when they complete secondary education, making girls' education one of the most effective ways to reduce child marriage.

School

  • Create safe, inclusive schools with trained female teachers, strong safeguarding policies, and scholarship programmes that can reduce teenage marriage by up to 49%.
  • Flexible school payment options: Offer instalment plans, fee waivers, and emergency bursaries so financial hardship does not force girls to leave school or enter child marriage.
  • Strengthen parental engagement: Educate and involve parents in their daughters' education to help families understand the long-term benefits of keeping girls in school.
  • Peer mentorship programmes: Connect girls with mentors and positive role models who provide guidance, encouragement, and support to build confidence, improve school retention, and foster future aspirations.
